DMR Radio

Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) is an open-standard digital radio technology for voice and data, commonly used in professional, commercial, and amateur (ham) radio. It uses TDMA to provide two time slots per 12.5 kHz channel, allowing for doubled capacity, clearer audio, and integrated features like texting and GPS.

Capacity & Efficiency: DMR doubles the number of users on a single 12.5 kHz channel compared to analog, using Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA).

Audio Quality: Digital processing removes background noise, providing clearer voice communication until the edge of coverage.

Versatility: Many DMR radios are dual-mode, supporting both digital and analog, allowing for a gradual transition for users.

Features: Supports private calling, group calling, SMS messaging, GPS location tracking, and emergency alerts.

System Tiers: Tier I is for unlicensed use (low power), and Tier II is for licensed conventional radio systems, common in commercial and ham radio.

Usage: Popular in public safety, transportation, and among amateur radio operators for connecting to global talkgroups via the internet (e.g., BrandMeister network). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
